Summer 2020 was quite something due to the pandemic and other things, but I try and relive the summer times with songs that give the refreshing thoughts of the beach, people sunbathing and surfing (without social distancing) and the waves crashing into the sediment.
JADEN – CABIN FEVER:
I really enjoy the blissful instrumental which also complements the vocals. Also, lyrically this song is relatable; I think the lines that hit hardest for me are “Dreaming ‘bout it, summertime (Ooh), Thinking ‘bout it, summertime (Oh)” and the chorus I cannot help but dance along to. I’d also highly recommend the music video too as it captures what Summer 2020 has been perfectly.
LIL SKIES – HAVING MY WAY FEAT. LIL DURK:
Lil Skies makes a strong comeback with this song. This track gives the vibe you’re in the night dancing around a bonfire in a Caribbean beach, also Skies and Durk breeze through this feel good beat with ease.
JOJI – DAYLIGHT FEAT. DIPLO:
One thing that captures the summer vibe perfectly is that punchy and fruitful Diplo instrumental, I get the vision of bicycles cruising through the sunlight. Joji fits the vibe well and provides some solid vocals to the table.
DUA LIPA – LEVITATING:
When I hear the chorus, I cannot help but sing along and have a good time. I also really enjoy the Intergalactic influences too, which adds to the “Future Nostalgia” concept; the chorus provides a nice 80s feel and the bridge has got some attitude. If this is a summer hit in Mars, Neptune or any distant planet, I won’t be surprised.
LIL UZI VERT – VENETIA:
I really like the slippery and futuristic instrumental which gives the vibe of riding a jet ski and speedboat across the bright blue shores, and Uzi’s flow on this track too. Lil Uzi Vert has a good reputation for making a lot of feel good music which make sense for this track to be played during the summer.
AITCH – RAIN FEAT. AJ TRACEY & TAY KEITH:
Everyone on this track killed it, I really liked the Tay Keith instrumental and was interested to hear what a UK rapper(s) would sound like over mainstream US production. Aitch and AJ Tracey embodied this instrumental. If you’re looking for a song with mainstream production and killer performances look no further.
TRIPPE REDD – I LOVE YOU FEAT. CHANCE THE RAPPER:
The rough plucky guitars in this track help create the vision of summer. I really enjoy the heavy 808s and the hard-hitting chorus as well and the animated Chance The Rapper verse. I can also play this track anywhere or any mood whether I’m happy or sad, making it an easy pick for my summer playlist.
RINA SAWAYAMA – XS:
The music video is currently sitting at 4 million views but I reckon it can go bigger, because it’s got the essential ingredients for a summer pop song, like soft guitars as well as occasional drops of heavy guitar riffs, and lyrics being delivered in a confident tone and a catchy chorus. The verses can be seen and described as a typical summer shopping spree.
TKAY MAIDZA – SHOOK:
Tkay Maidza is another artist that deserves a lot more recognition because a majority of her discography has hit potential, and this is not an exception. This track features excellent banging production with a catchy chorus and lines delivered in a feel-good tone, when I hear the chorus, I feel like the greatest person alive to be honest.
POP SMOKE – THE WOO FEAT. 50 CENT & RODDY RICCH:
The laid-back guitars set the tranquil beach vibe; these are done by 18-year-old Swedish guitarist Rxcksta. Pop Smoke’s auto-crooning helps adds to the tranquility and Roddy Ricch and 50 help give this track more hit potential with their performances. If this song doesn’t remind you of a chill summer, I don’t know what does.
INTERNET MONEY – LEMONADE FEAT. DON TOLIVER, NAV & GUNNA:
The first 5 seconds of this track I immediately knew this was going to be a summer smash because it contains a beat that spells “Summer” with a capital S and an impressive hook by Don Toliver. NAV and Gunna do their thing on this track, but for every day of Summer when the sun is shining, I have to play this song, it’s the law. Hence why it’s my personal song of the summer.
