Luke is a teenaged student, who does not match the sexual stereotypes and gets regularly called a “fag” by some classmates in the cafeteria or the gym. The other students start to ignore him and he suffers from this isolation. Luke looks for any possible way to avoid these places, to not get insulted.
This is just one situation which could be defined as bullying. Bullying describes the term when someone is picked on by a person or a group. A bully makes fun of an individual, who he thinks, does not fit in because of either their appearance, behaviour, race or religion, social state or sexual identity.
There are different types of bullying such as Verbal bullying, which means that somebody is taunted or teased, Physical bullying, that is practised by hurting a human physically e.g. punching, tripping or even sexually assaulting him or her.
Examples for Psychological bullying are gossiping or spreading rumours and Cyberbullying means insulting somebody by using social media or spreading private pictures or information.
These described forms can cause damage to the bullied. If you have ever bullied someone, your actions cannot only make the other person feel anxious, stressed or even depressed. The attacked could also have suicidal thoughts or start to hurt himself.
Besides, bullying people can cause them to have eating or sleep disorders. If you experience bullying, do not make yourself small. Be confident! Do not care about the opinion of others, because these judgements only limit you! Do not ‘feed’ the bullies because as long as they see how much it pulls you down what they do or say, they won’t stop.
If you ever see a situation where another individual is being bullied, stand up for them! Tell the bullies to stop, or get someone to help and support the attacked person to stay strong. Do not just laugh or ignore the situation! It could be you, being attacked!
Additionally when you make jokes about people, you have to know their limits! You cannot expect the other person to know, whether you are joking or not.
Never insult people that you barely know, as a joke because you cannot know if they get it or think you are serious. Joking can never be an excuse when you hurt someone!
