I am Gabrielle Ayriss, I am 15 years old, and I am a student in Suffolk, England. I have been offered the fantastic opportunity of travelling to Borneo with Camps International in September 2021. I will be travelling to Borneo, to work with the local members of the Bornean society. I will be providing help, so they can improve the sustainability of their island. The work and help that I will provide will have life-changing impacts on the local community. The empowering approach I aspire to have with communal leaders and the relationships I will build, can enable me to work closely with society and create projects which will change the lives of the Malaysian people.
Borneo is a Malaysian island and is one of the most biodiverse areas on earth. It faces struggles and challenges daily, there are constant risks of deforestation, and there is a severe lack of education for young children. When I can travel over to Malaysia, I will be combating the difficult challenges of the locals. Over four weeks, I will be embarking on a stunning journey. I will be volunteering in 4 key aspects; the environment, the wildlife, the local people and also critical infrastructure. I will be aiding the environment by replanting tree saplings in areas affected by deforestation. I will also take a trip to the oceans around Borneo and take litter from the beaches. To help the local community, a team and I will construct centres, libraries, bridges and school classrooms in the villages. We will be making sustainable livelihoods to enable traders and farmers to gain income. The crew will also be giving and producing maintainable infrastructure. Installing water systems and improving local amenities. By doing this, the healthcare and sanitation of the island will improve, making lives better for the generations in Borneo.
Not only will I be doing this, but I will also be helping rehabilitate animals and other local species which are at the risk of extinction. We aim to support the wildlife areas as much as possible; therefore, we will be taking multiple trips to sanctuaries near the main river. I will be helping create habitats for native animals like sun bears and orangutans.
Borneo is a unique ecosystem of the vibrant jungle and unexplored tropical wilderness paired with exotic wildlife. By going on this trip, I can take my first steps in facilitating the world and trekking through mother nature’s glory. However, I cannot embark on this journey alone; I need the support of others to help me get there. My goal is to raise a total of £4350 by 2021. I have already raised an astounding £703. I would be so grateful for your donations. It doesn’t have to be a significant amount because every penny counts, but if you would like to donate, I have a go fund me page. I’m excited to have you follow my journey.
