Despite the hard times that the world is facing during this pandemic, a positive that we can all take from this situation is knowing that our planet is benefiting massively from social distancing and self-isolation. Our world is on pause which seems to mean global pollution is too!

It’s not only Venice waters that are running clear, but would you believe that the UK merky seas are also transforming?! Water pollution levels are lower than ever, carbon emissions have dropped, animals are roaming the streets, traffic levels have been reduced AND pollution and greenhouse emissions have and will also continue to significantly plummet. THE AIR IS CLEANER. As well as that, the largest EVER Arctic ozone hole is now closed and healing – it’ll potentially fully recover!!! (Whilst, this is believed to be unprecedented to COVID-19 it’s still GREAT news.)

FACT: “Coal consumption at power plants dropped by 36 per cent, satellites have shown that nitrogen oxide levels were 37 per cent lower than this time last year, and emissions overall are down by a quarter.”

It seems that human hibernation is therefore not only protecting us right now, but also the health of our planet. Our response to this health emergency will help to create a healthier future; we all have a role to play!

Let this good news help us to think more responsibly about the environmental consequences of our actions. Hopefully these positive changes will stick and this can be a positive lesson learnt. We need these outcomes to have a more persistent effect so it’s up to us to keep going!!
