Ring. Class was now over and Annie was at her locker. Some boys rushed past, laughing. Jesus, do they have to be so obnoxious? Annie fell to the floor, her books flying in every direction. She scurried around on the floor picking them back up then putting them away neatly in her locker, slamming the door shut and letting out a long sigh of relief. Annie was the type you might classify under ‘loner’. She keeps to herself and no one has ever taken the time to know her.

On the other side of the hall was Jane. She was very outgoing but not quite popular and was known for being a lesbian. The two girls were in the same classes but had never spoken, and yet Jane had fallen for Annie’s quirky personality that shined through when she was alone.

But this isn’t your average high school love story where they fall in love and become soul mates. Annie was different, she’d never been in a relationship and had never even thought about it; it never really interested her.

Jane walked over and gave a casual ‘Hello’.

‘Sorry if I’m being bold but can you meet me after school? I need help with the Bio Homework.’ Her gentle smile wasn’t something Annie could say no to, so she agreed and they met after school, ‘So, which bit do you need help with?’ Annie opened her text book.

‘All of it I suppose.’ She gave a small chuckle, Annie couldn’t help but smile.

She spent the rest of the afternoon explaining in as much detail as she could, as Jane sat there in awe, taking in everything Annie said. The next day, Jane sat next to Annie in Biology and they started hanging out more often. Jane couldn’t help but smile around her, she wanted desperately to ask her out, to confess but she didn’t want to ruin this new friendship.

One day, whilst standing at Annie’s locker the words just came out.

Annie replied, ‘Listen Jane, I’m actually ace and I’ve never really thought about having a relationship but, if there’s anyone I’d want to be with, it’s you.” Jane squealed in delight and tackled Annie into a hug. And they walked away. Together.
