A health awareness week which I think needs to be talked about more is Blood Pressure Awareness Week, 10th – 16th September (Know Your Numbers Week). We should all know what blood pressure is, what it should be if we are healthy and the health risks if we have high blood pressure, but how much do we actually know about our blood pressure?
Let’s start with the numbers. The top number on the reading is our pressure when the heart is pushing blood around our body and the bottom number is our pressure when our heart is relaxed.
Know Your Numbers Week focuses on making people aware of the risks high blood pressure carries and encourages people to get their blood pressure checked. Now don’t freak out if you have your blood pressure checked and it is high, it takes multiple readings of it being consistently high before you are diagnosed with high blood pressure. The health risks of high blood pressure commonly are heart attack, heart disease and strokes and these are increased only when you have had high blood pressure over a long period of time and left untreated. Another thing to be aware of is that high blood pressure usually has no symptoms hence why it is sometimes called ‘the silent killer’. As well as high blood pressure, being aware of low blood pressure I feel is just as important. Now having low blood pressure doesn’t carry the increased risk of heart related problems like high blood pressure but can affect your health. As someone with low blood pressure, I know the side effects I suffer with and to combat them, I keep a fizzy drink with me at all times as well as some mints. This probably isn’t the healthiest method, but it works for me.
