Over the years, Pride has attracted the attention of millions; not only in the community but outside of it as well. It has been well and truly wonderful to be part of a community and celebration which is rapidly growing in size, getting our name out there and giving us the opportunity to have the biggest and best parties in June and July. However, something has come to my attention this year which I haven’t noticed before.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a sucker for Pride. It’s wonderful to have a time to be yourself, to feel safe and to feel proud. This year the amount of “LGBTQ+” products that are on sale are more than ever. I don’t think I’ve ever had so many rainbow products available to me and not just your standard flags. Large companies are getting involved promoting how they are now LGBTQ+ allies even to the point of selling “Pride Sandwiches.” It just makes me question the authenticity of these companies. Is the Pride sandwich going to help people come out and be proud of who they are? I don’t think it’s any different to any other sandwich, so why should we pay more for it just because there’s a rainbow flag on it? In my opinion it’s by using the pride label to target the community to make more money with no actual support of the group itself.

There is nothing wrong in buying LGBTQ+ products, my partner has some wonderful rainbow shoes (which I’m hoping to steal one day.) It just infuriates me as some large commercial companies, which have shown no empathy or genuine care towards the community are seeing Pride as a gateway to increase their sales and that’s not what Pride is about.

So, no matter what you buy this year for Pride; remember the real reason we’re celebrating.
