Running is such a great way to keep fit, lose weight or even just get out and about. Carry on reading this article for the best ways for beginners to start, the best ways to improve and little tricks I’ve learnt along the way.
The best way to start running is to real ise there is no shame in walking or stopping. If you start thinking you can run 10 miles easy then you have a nasty shock awaiting you. The best thing to do is start with a small run that you may think is too easy and find what pace you are happy with. Now the optimum pace is different for every person, it may feel like its really slow but its better to start slow and go further than run a short distance fast.
Once you find your pace you will find that you find it easier to run for longer and further distances. Once you do this you may find that the original route you planned was too short and you want to go further. If this happens then just add small bits onto it but be careful not to add too much because if you start to struggle later and you have to call it quits then it could feel like a bit of a failure, its not!
I started running about a year ago so I’ve got a few tricks that could help you run better or more confidently than before.
Listen to music. It’s easy to just focus on how tired you are when running so to distract you from that what other way is better than music! It can also help with your pace if you feel like you are speeding up or slowing down. The average person runs at about 150-180 steps per minute so picking a song with a bpm or around that could make a massive difference
Start slightly slower than your normal pace. Despite doing stretches your muscles might not be fully warmed up so starting slow will let the muscles get the blood flow before they start to ache.
Get a running app. There are all sorts or running apps available but I’ve found that Strava and Runkeeper are the ones I prefer, not to say they are the best though! The apps allows you to see the route that you ran and gives you the time it took for each part and much more.
And enjoy it. If you have fun then you are more likely to want to go again!
