Last month we travelled to London, mainly to visit the V&A Museum (which we’d recommend going to if you’re interested in art, history, photography and even just culture in general!) and obviously we went to a restaurant in the evening. We chose Black and Blue, a steak and wine house situated opposite Waterloo station and only a short walk away from the Southbank. Josh had been many years ago and we wanted to see if it was still just as nice – it was so amazing that we HAD to review it in case you are ever in London and needed a place to eat! (We hope to continue sharing the best of our adventures and trips out together with you!)
Since the restaurant is located underneath a tube line, the restaurant is built in the bricked arches giving it a classy but cosy atmosphere. The decor is simplistically beautiful with black/chrome fittings, a traditional bar at the back and an Alice in Wonderland themed neon sign (“Eat me, Drink me”) above giving a modern twist on the rustic framework of the building. All of the staff were lovely and very attentive – even the security guard wished us a wonderful evening and a safe trip home which we thought was so nice!
They have a fairly wide range of food, of course mainly steak but also burgers, ribs, chargrilled dishes and salads to choose from. Although we opted for soft drinks, for those over 18 they have an extensive wine list designed to accompany the food they sell. Unfortunately, we were too full to indulge in one of their desserts, but they looked delicious! They also serve breakfast.
As with most restaurants that are suggested to me, I always have to look at the menus before to see how well they cater for vegetarians however I was happy to find there was something I would like. I chose the ‘Baked field mushroom, grilled vegetables, goats’ cheese, fries’ costing £12 – practically my idea of heaven! I’d honestly say that it was one of the nicest meals that I have ever had, everything was cooked to perfection and there was a good generous amount of Goats’ cheese. It was drizzled with a pesto and also came with a rocket salad. The fries were the perfect balance between being fluffy on the inside with the right amount of crisp.
I loved the ambience of the place too – intimate candlelit lighting and a warm, welcoming vibe (as well as wonderful food) made for a very special end to our evening.
The only criticism that I have is of the choice on the menu. I was lucky to adore what I had but if you didn’t fancy it the only other vegetarian option is a ‘kale, quinoa, feta and pomegranate’ salad or a cheese omelette from the lunch menu. Although it is a steakhouse and vegetarian/vegan options are always limited at every restaurant, I think that they could probably have a few more things to choose from. Apart from that it was wonderful! 4.5/5
With Tee being a vegetarian, suggesting a steakhouse as a place to eat may not seem like the first choice. However, as she says, the vegetarian option that she chose was absolutely divine! I had a Scottish beef burger with added bacon and cheese, with a side of fries. It was honestly the best burger I have ever had! With a choice of cooking preference (mine is medium or medium-rare), your burger (or steak for that matter) is perfect for you. The independent restaurant group has been running since 1999 (just like me!) and in that time they’ve expanded to four restaurants across the capital. They even own their own butchers shop, so they know that all their food comes from a proper source from farm to fork. Honestly, I’d give it a solid 5/5. Gorgeous.
So, if you happen to find yourself in London for any reason, I’d recommend paying the Black and Blue restaurant in Waterloo a visit!
