I am a huge lover of sequins; I would honestly say that at least a quarter of my wardrobe consists of a range of sequins and sparkle. Sparkles are not just for party season – shimmer lifts every outfit and will make a casual ensemble look sophisticated, while sequins really add an edge to your basics and should become a staple part of your wardrobe.

Wearing sequined and glittery pieces during the day might not be second nature to most of us, but sparkle, which was once reserved for evening, is now considered suitable for more casual occasions too. There are so many ways of incorporating sparkle into your daytime wardrobe, that more than being viable, are actually very chic.

There is also no denying the appeal of sparkle during celebration season and while sequins may have their more relevant moments on the catwalk, they will always be fitting for those Christmas and New Year parties. It is another easy way to bring your more daytime-appropriate looks into the evening (try jeans with a sparkly top) – for too long, we’ve collectively restricted our sparkliest ensembles for special occasions. However, they are also great options for going all-out with head-to-toe shine for a big event!

It’s the season where we should all take inspiration from the decorations we will have all over our homes and workplaces for at the least the month of December. Embrace anything from all over sequins and embellishment, to basically anything that can light up a room!

Like florals, sequins are finally breaking free from their timely constraints to become something we can wear year-round. 2019 fashionistas have also been wearing them subtly throughout the course of the summer and are starting to ramp up their sequinned ensembles as we continue into autumn/winter.

MEN AND SEQUINS

Not all of the glistening fun should be left to women! Abide by some basic rules when adding shine and sparkle to your outfit and you’ll create a look that is still bold and masculine.

Use metallics and statement high-shine pieces to indulge in the sparkly trend. For example, if you choose a sequin-embellished blazer, pair it with sleek black trousers and a crisp white shirt.

SEQUIN RULES

There are no rules! You can wear sequinned pieces with a pair of edgy trainers and headwear for a sporty-glam look, or you can wear it with a pair of flats and a cardigan for a toned-down look.

However here are some of my 8 top tips on how to incorporate them into your wardrobe this winter!

  1. 1 Sequin piece per outfit

  2. Offset something sparkly with something practical
    Trousers, Skirts, Jeans

  3. Incorporate Tailoring
A little tailoring goes a long way when it comes to making your glitzy pieces appropriate for day – something like a pair of check trousers is perfect for the balance! Pairing a sequined T-shirt with a double-breasted jacket and skirt creates a playful, festive but smart outfit.

  4. Using sparkly accents can help to direct the eye. For example, shiny belts are a great addition.

  5. A shiny metallic print is a great way to wear sparkle without the added weight of embellishments.

  6. Statement sweaters are the perfect way to team up with some wardrobe sequin pieces.

  7. Perhaps the easiest way to incorporate sparkle in your wardrobe is through footwear. Flats, boots or sneakers – there’s no shortage of shimmering shoes around and investing in a pair will offer you a one stop way to jazz p simple pieces both for work and the weekend. Ramp up a sleek all black outfit with shiny metallic shoes.

  8. Accessories are the safe way to add sparkle and shine to any block colour outfits. Choose from bags, shoes, jewellery, belts, scarves and hats to add that extra sparkle to your outfit (however sequinned outfits alone do not require any additional jewellery)!

Now it’s time to step outside and be noticed. Add some shimmer and sequin shine into your life!

I would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a fab 2020!

See you all next year,
Pam
