Last month hosted the annual ‘Lift Share Week’ which aims to promote the benefits of car sharing. This national campaign urges you to get involved with car sharing your journeys which not only is better for the environment as it cuts down on carbon emissions, it can also save you money in petrol and car parking costs too.

So, how can you car share?

There are a number of ways that you can car share or find others to join you on a similar journey, but before you consider car-sharing, please remember your personal safety first. There are a number of legit schemes out there which can help you to find suitable matches (such as Liftshare), but these sites need to be approached with caution. Other means of setting up car-sharing may be through an informal arrangement with friends or family. Some organisations are also able to arrange car-sharing for their employees. You don’t need to be able to drive as you could just be the passenger.

What are the benefits?

I’ve already touched on a couple of positives from car sharing but here are a few more that are promoted by indirect*:

  • Increased personal safety as you might have someone to walk to the car park with.

  • Reduced carbon emissions can also mean better air quality.

  • With fewer cars on the road, there would be less of sitting in traffic and more of getting to your destination quicker.

  • There would be an increased chance of finding a parking space as there would be fewer cars competing for a space.

  • You’d have someone to talk to, sing with or just be with on your journey.

Anything else to consider?

Here’s a few additional things you might want to check before you start car sharing:

  • Have you confirmed your pick up time, date and any fuel costs?

  • Do you have contact details of your sharer?

  • Does the car insurance cover passengers?

  • Have you discussed rules around eating and drinking in the car?

  • Be prepared that your companion may want to chat (a lot!) or not at all!

Enjoy your journey!
