As you all know I’m a lover of the winter season, it brings a lovely mix of autumnal colours and cosy nights. Preparing for Christmas and New Year will bring endless lists of things to buy and do! I have no doubt we will all at one stage need to delve into our wardrobes for outfits for different occasions. However, a lot hangs on the perfect winter coat – warmth, practicality, good looks.

Coat shopping is a fine sartorial tightrope to tread. You want it to look trendy but stay relevant for more than a year, to look expensive but not bankrupt you entirely, and be the perfect finishing touch to outfits without outshining what’s underneath.

While few would celebrate the arrival of rainy season and winter colds, there’s undoubtedly some joy to be had in layering a great mac over a chunky knit and clomping around in black tights with a sturdy pair of biker boots. For anyone craving something fresh, now’s a great time to invest in a few key pieces that will work hard in your winter wardrobe and will complement any of your outfits for the coming months.

Let’s be clever and choose winter coats that promise to be a piece you will wear all the way from now until at least February and for years to come.

This season’s coat styles have something for everyone to indulge in, whatever your taste and budget. The trends this year can be summed up in five words: go big or go home. It’s not an understatement to say that coats are huge this coming season and pretty much in every way you can think of – whether that’s to do with the shape, the length or just the colour.

Below is my must have coat edit for Autumn/Winter 2019

MACS

Women

Stay warm and on trend in classic trench coats and macs. A wardrobe staple for colder months, they lend a smart finish to your look with the belted and longline fit. Stylish cuff details, buttons and faux fur hooded designs make these a fashion must have, with statement prints giving autumn/ winter a classic style.

Men

Opt for a lightweight outer layer this season. You will find everything from longline trench coats and smart macs, to wool trench coats and double-breasted trench coats in shower-resistant fabrics (in case you get caught in a downpour!).

CAMEL COATS

Women

There is nothing more classic and flattering than a camel coat. Whether you pair it with jeans and knitwear, or use is as the cover-up for your slip dress, you can always rely on it. The forever classic that goes with everything

Men

It seems that everyone can agree that camel-coloured topcoats are a good style move. Whatever your gender, age, or style, it’s the one coat that transcends all fashion boundaries. We need more of that! It’s stylish, functional, and inclusive. What’s not to love?

CHECKS

Women

Wear it bold, wear it muted – just wear it!

Wrap up for the cold season in style with checked print being used on a range of women’s coat styles. Whether you choose a more classic fit with cocoon coats and double-breasted styles, or a statement standalone piece such as longline maxi coat, checked print coats ensure you won’t compromise on style or warmth.

Men

For men, a checked coat is a must-have piece of outerwear. A natural people pleaser, this style of coat is both on trend and an evergreen staple. If you’re a dedicated follower of heritage menswear, checks are fair and square and everywhere – play it smart and traditional and you can’t go wrong.

Winter is definitely on its way so wrap up warm and have fun with your coats! If you are fashionably daring, opt for brighter colours, as I have been wearing on a recent model job on This Morning. It’s my favourite kind of style for this time of year!
