‘Me time’ sounds like such a selfish thing to do and you may feel judged by saying ‘I need some me time’ but honestly it is one of the most beneficial things you could do! I’ve recently learned this over the past couple weeks.
It is a big year for me academically as I am in my third year at university which means I have to write my dissertation and think about what I want to do after university.
On top of this I am working part-time in retail, co-editor of the Physical Health section of the magazine and maintaining my blog; I am a very busy person! With all of this, I find it very easy to forget to take time for myself and just plough on without allowing myself a chance to breathe sometimes!
However, I learnt the hard way a couple weeks ago that I need to take a break! I managed to stress myself out by making myself believe that I was already behind on my uni work and was working overtime to try and catch up; even though I was already up to date and, in some cases, ahead. This led to me to having a mini breakdown and making myself ill which stressed me out more!
In the end, I had to take a break over a weekend to recover from my illness and to help find a way for me to relax when it gets too much for me because I couldn’t afford for this to happen on a regular basis. So I have now put a plan in place so I stop working at 8pm every night and do something for myself whether that is reading a book I’m not studying, playing a game, listening to music or just getting an early night. I have also planned to have a day off where I do whatever I want that isn’t related to anything I’m currently doing such as going to the cinema/theatre, going out with friends or just going shopping on my own.
I have found that having ‘me time’ has been really beneficial for me and I recommend that everyone should take them for themselves no matter what.
